These early 20th century purple mangosteen shaped wooden container boxes were once used as jewelry boxes by a Peranakan Chinese Nyonya in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies. In Malay’s culture, mangosteen’s crown or Tampuk manggis” symbolizes a kind and compassionate person. Because of its elegant and attractive shape, it fits perfectly in a Peranakan style decoration.
